A commercial crop is a crop which is grown for money. The term is used to differentiate from subsistence crops, which are those fed to the producer's own livestock or grown as food for the producer's family. In earlier times commercial crops were usually only a small (but vital) part of a farm's total yield, while today, especially in the developed countries, almost all crops are mainly grown for commercial reasons. In non-developed nations, commercial crops are usually crops which attract demand in more developed nations, and hence have some export value. Commercial crops include oilseeds, fibre crops, condiments and spices, sugar crops, etc.
Crops (other than fruits or vegetables) that are grown for agricultural purposes in fields are called Field Crops. Field crops mainly include Cereals, Millets, Pulses and Starch crops. Some of the important Cereal crops include Barley, Maize, Rice and Wheat. Main pulses crops are Bengal gram, Black Gram, Field pea, French bean, lentil and pigeon pea.
Horticulture Crops (Fruits), falls under Pomology which mainly include tropical and subtropical fruits like mango and banana, Temperate Fruits like apple, arid region fruits like Aonla, etc. Indian has wide variety of climate and soils which is suitable for a large number of fruit crops.
Horticulture Crops (Vegetables) that are grown in different parts of India include bulb, Cole, Cucurbits, Root, Solaneous Crops. Bulb crop include Onions; Cole crops include Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cucurbits, Ridge Gourd, Sponge Gourd and Carrot; Solaneous include Brinjal, Tomato etc. India has a diverse agro-climatic conditions and soils that support variety of horticultural vegetable crops.
Plantation is an estate on which crops such as coffee, sugar, and tobacco are cultivated by resident laborers. An agricultural system, generally a mono culture, for the production of tropical and subtropical crops, especially bananas, coffee, cocoa, cotton, palm oil, rubber, sisal, spices, sugar, and tea.
